VEVRAA is a federal law enacted 50 years ago to support veterans looking for jobs. It doesn't do that. Meanwhile, corporations are taking credit for assistance they aren't providing, stealing valor in the process.
Unfortunately, fixing the law involves politicians. VEVRAA needs to be amended so that it is easier to enforce and so contractors face repercussions when they fail to hire veterans. This means Congress has to act. As does the Department of Labor.
Tell us about your experiences applying for jobs and working after you left the military. Contact your Congressional representatives and inform them about the problem.
When it became law in 1974, VEVRAA focused on young people returning from the Vietnam War. It now covers nearly all former members of the military.
